Almost (But Not Quite) Back to Normal: A Step-By-Step Guide to Visiting CBL in 2021

Ocean breezes, sunny skies…there’s no question that we’re in the middle of a beautiful Maine summer! Although Summer of 2021 still looks and feels a little different than any before the pandemic, our team at Casco Bay Lines has been hard at work to ensure the safety of our passengers and to continue service without disruption, getting our operations almost (but not quite) back to normal.

Staying up to date on the current policies, reviewing updates and changes, and checking revised schedules — we understand that navigating an “almost” normal can be tricky. That’s why our team at CBL has compiled a step-by-step guide for those who are heading back out on the water.

Step 1: Review Requirements

Although most of the changes to operations that were put in place at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic have been rolled back following updated CDC guidance, there are still some in place, and they may continue to change. Please be sure to review our Coronavirus Resources page before visiting our terminal to ensure that you have the most up-to-date information.

As business operations on the islands may also be impacted by COVID-19, we advise that all passengers check in with or contact their destination prior to traveling. As requirements may vary from island to island and business to business, please be sure to review and abide by any policies to support our island communities.

P.S. If you haven’t visited us before, our FAQ page offers helpful guidance on purchasing tickets and parking!

Step 2: BYOM (Bring Your Own Mask)

Before arriving at our terminal, remember to bring a mask. U.S. federal law continues to require all people, regardless of vaccination status, to wear masks on public transportation and at transportation hubs. CBL continues to require all persons to wear masks inside our terminal facilities, while boarding and debarking, and while inside the passenger cabins onboard our vessels. In accordance with CDC guidance, CBL encourages those who are not fully vaccinated to continue wearing masks.

Step 3: Determine Your Destination

Whether or not you have a specific island outing planned, our summer schedule provides daily, roundtrip service to-and-from Chebeague Island, Cliff Island, Diamond Cove, Great Diamond, Little Diamond, Long Island, and Peaks Island. Please note that we are currently running on a revised summer schedule. Due to COVID-19, this is a modified version of our regular summer schedule. For rates and service times, please click here.

Step 4: Pack Up + Pet Policy

Once you make your plans, simply pack a bag with refreshments of your choosing (food and drinks are welcome on board), sunscreen, and an extra layer. There’s no need to purchase a ticket in advance. Head on down to our terminal located on the Maine State Pier, purchase your ticket, and come aboard!

Hoping to bring your four-legged friend along? Dogs are allowed on our ferries! Please be aware that they need their own ticket ($4.10) unless they are in a pet carrier or are a designated service animal. All dogs are required to be on a leash for the entire duration of the ferry ride.

Need to transport your bike? Please keep in mind that bikes require a separate ticket: bike tickets for adults are $6.50 and $3.25 for children.

Step 5: Stay Savvy

As we’re currently undergoing construction in our terminal, please be sure to take notice of the construction areas when you arrive and abide by the signage for your own safety. Although much of the initial site work has been completed, and the area has been paved, renovations are still ongoing. For more information on our Terminal Renovation Project, please click here.

Step 6: Enjoy!

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us continue to operate safely. We look forward to seeing you on your way to spend the day on Casco Bay!
