Casco Bay Island Transit District is implementing changes to rates for vehicle service to Peaks Island. Effective February 28, 2026:
- There will no longer be a distinction between commercial and non-commercial vehicles.
- Weight based pricing is eliminated and replaced with length-based pricing. Vehicle length is based on total length including trailers, bike racks, ladders, or other protrusions.
- Charges for cargo are eliminated.
- Peak season and off-peak season rates have been established for Sunday-Wednesday and Thursday-Saturday. See rate chart below.
- All vehicles under 21′ are now eligible for passholder discounts, including a new passholder discount tier for vehicles 20.1’ to 21’.
- Vehicles 20’ in length or shorter should continue to purchase tickets at the Ticket Window inside the terminal.
- Vehicles over 20’ long, or any vehicle using an account or credit card on file, should continue to purchase their tickets at the Freight Window.
- The reservation policy is not changing and remains as follow: Reservations for commercial vehicles from Portland to Peaks Island will be accepted at the CBITD Office between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, and must be made no less than 24 hours prior to the scheduled run. Reservations for up to two commercial vehicles per run will be accepted for any scheduled weekday service up to and including the 12:15 pm run on Friday. The cost for each reservation will be $25.00 in addition to the applicable transportation charge.
- Any vehicle wider than 8’6” will incur an additional 50% surcharge.

A public hearing and Board of Directors vote and approval for these changes was conducted on December 18, 2025. More information is available at the Transit District’s website. Any 50 or more ratepayers may file pursuant to 35A M.S.R.A., Section 1302, a written request with the Maine Public Utilities Commission in Augusta for an investigation of the rate changes adopted by the Transit District.
