Casco Bay Island Transit District (CBITD) is seeking to fill the position of Assistant Port Engineer to assist the Port Engineer with the day-to-day Engineering Department operations and maintenance activities of the District’s fleet as well as assisting with planning, organizing, scheduling the efficient utilization of the fleet using Vessel Vanguard to monitor the day to day preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance activities of the fleet. In cooperation with the Port Engineer, assisting with repair and shipyard maintenance planning and schedule compliance to ensure efficient maintenance activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists Port Engineer and vessel staff with routine USCG and other regulatory inspections.
  • Fleet Maintenance Monitoring, Scheduling, Planning and Inventory Control
  • Shall be available to respond to emergency calls after hours.
  • Assist with the timely and cost-effective maintenance, repair and modifications of existing fleet.
  • Assist in developing dry dock specifications and vendor bid packages.
  • Assist with monitoring the contractor and/or shipyard during maintenance and repair projects.
  • Assist in conducting on-site surveys of vessels and equipment to determine maintenance and repair needs.
  • This position reports to the Port Engineer. Work is performed under limited supervision.

Requirements Qualifications:

  • MMC rating of QMED-Oiler (min) or 3rd Engineer or higher preferred
  • TWIC card
  • Maritime Academy Graduate (preferred).
  • 5 years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of marine vessels, engines, auxiliary equipment, and facilities including experience in preventative maintenance systems and structures.
  • Capable of prolonged, strenuous work onboard vessels
  • Effective written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to operate industrial equipment and their systems safely
  • Ability to operate a personal computer
  • Employment is contingent upon:

Physical Requirements Include, Among Others:

  • Requires standing, lifting up to 50 lbs from deck to shoulder level
  • Ability to climb a 12-foot ladder without assistance
  • Requires the ability to wear the personnel protective equipment prescribed by posted signs and written instruction
  • Able to work in various temperatures indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions including heat, cold, rain or dry environments
