Island Info - Chebeague Island, Maine
Chebeague (pron: shuh-Beeg) is one of Maine’s most beautiful islands! It is home to generations of year-round and summer residents. At 3½ miles long and 1½ miles wide, Chebeague is the largest island in Casco Bay and is home to over 360 year-round people and over 4,000 summer residents. Its name means "isle of many springs." Chebeague Island has a storied history of sailing, notably the stone sloopers, men who carried ballast for the sailing ships of the 19th century America and later granite for many of the country’s most spectacular buildings, including the Washington Monument. The many lovely Greek Revival homes on the island were built by these sloopers. Free Bicycle Rentals Because Chebeague Island does not have regular car ferry service, the island is best enjoyed on foot or with a bicycle. A short walk from the State Pier located in Chandler’s Wharf is the “bike man” who offers visitors a free bike rental as long as they are returned. Friendliness is second nature on this island where a wave to every passerby is considered customary. The Great Chebeague Golf Club Continue to bike or walk along the circular route that tours the island and you will encounter many other exciting destinations including the Great Chebeague Golf Club, a nine-hole course founded in 1920 that enjoys water views from every hole. Lunch Places Stop for lunch at the Niblic, Calder’s Clam Shack, Doughty’s Market, or a sit-down lunch at the Chebeague Island Inn. Located at the town’s center, the Niblic is next to the marina, post office, library, community center, and historical society museum. The Chebeague Island Inn The Chebeague Island Inn is a 1920s hotel that has been thoughtfully restored to recapture its classic beauty. Featuring 21 guest rooms, each individually detailed by local Maine artists, a Great Room with a large stone fireplace, and a 75-seat fine-dining restaurant overlooking a westerly sunset, it is the ideal place to enjoy a cocktail on the porch or a special evening out. Ferry Services to the Island Two ferry services provide transportation to the island; service from Portland on Casco Bay Lines and service from Yarmouth, Maine via the Chebeague Transportation Company (CTC). A scenic tour of the Bay can be enjoyed from Portland on an hour and a half ride or a quick 15-minute hop from Yarmouth on CTC. |
